Past Lives- have you had a past life?

There are many many therapists it seems, that claim to be able to bring forth memories in your mind, of lives that you have lived before, previous to the life you currently enjoy. Re-incarnation is a belief that many around the world hold as part of their belief system, being part of the Hindu and Buddhist traditions to name but two. But even if we were to accept re-incarnation as a fact, is it actually possible to remember a past life, while we are living a new one?

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence for re-incarnation. Dr. Ian Stevenson, in works such as Reincarnation and Biology: A Contribution to the Etiology of Birth Marks and Birth Defects reports of many cases where memories of previous lives and injuries sustained in them, are found to correlate with birth marks and birth defects found in the bodies of those with the relevant memories.

It is often said also, that children who seem to possess memories of places they have never been, languages that they shouldn't be able to speak, knowledge about subjects that they have never been taught about in school, provide us with examples of evidence of re-incarnation that cannot be easily dismissed.

Therapists claim, that through their regression techniques, they are able to bring a person to a state of consciousness where memories of past lives are able to surface. And that in doing so, they are able to help the client address issues that they carry in this life, that have not been dealt with, or were in fact caused by previous lives, and not events in the present life.

A bold claim!

On the more skeptical side, Paul Edwards in  Reincarnation: A Critical Examination, argues that under closer scrutiny, these anecdotal examples fall down as 'proof' of anything that cannot be explained by non-mystical means.

The real question when it comes to choosing whether to experience a past life regression though, is whether it is helpful in our current circumstance, to improve our wellbeing, here and now. And if this is the case, then there is a strong argument for finding a reputable practitioner, and seeing what your regression tells you about yourself!
